US, Iraq: Secret Occupation Deal

Washington : The administration of President George W. Bush is negotiating a secret deal in Baghdad which would perpetuate the American military occupation of Iraq indefinitely.

Bush wants 50 military bases, control of Iraqi airspace and legal immunity for all American soldiers and contractors, The Independent paper reports.

According to the source, one of the main objectives of the agreement is to guarantee US presence in Iraqi territory for unlimited period, regardless of the outcome of the US presidential election in November, to elect Bush’s successor.

The intention is to neutralize Democrat candidate Barack Obama, who announced US troop’s withdrawal from Iraq, assures the digital version the British metropolitan newspaper.

According to The Independent, Baghdad officials fear the agreement generates disastrous political consequences.

We would be confronting a serious situation when it comes to sovereignty matters, we would lose legitimacy as government, and international community would see us as workers of Washington, a leader anonymously commented.

Recently, the expert in energy issues Mamdouh Salameh asserted that the White House only seeks taking position of oil reserves in the Arab country.

Salameh recalled the large hydrocarbon reserves in that country.

US invaded Iraq in March, 2003, where there are more than 150,000 US soldiers.
