New Delhi : Punjab fast bowler Manpreet Gony has been rewarded for his excellent performance in the Indian Premier League (IPL) by being picked for the tri-series in Bangladesh in place of injured Santhakumaran Sreesanth, the Indian cricket board announced here Saturday.
Gony was selected on the basis of a brilliant show in IPL as well as in domestic competition. He finished with 17 wickets from 16 matches at 26.05, which made him the leading wicket-taker for Chennai Super Kings and fourth highest overall in the IPL.
He was picked by the Super Kings after finishing as the leading wicket taker in the Deodhar Trophy, taking nine from three matches at 14.66. Gony made his first-class debut in December last year against Baroda.
India’s one-day skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni, who also led the Chennai Super Kings, was effusive in praising Gony’s efforts in IPL.
Sreesanth suffered the injury while playing for Kings XI Punjab in the last league game against Rajasthan Royals on April 28 and was ruled out of the series that has Pakistan as the third team.
Sreesanth, who was assessed in National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Bangalore Friday, will take two weeks to recover from the injury and will undergo rehabilitation at NCA. He is expected to be fit in time for the Asia Cup in Pakistan.
Sachin Tendulkar and Zaheer Khan have already been ruled out of the tri-series owing to groin and ankle injuries.
