India Media Echoes Rome Declaration

By Prensa Latina,

New Delhi : Indian media echoed on Friday the call issued at the World Summit on Food Security for in-depth studies to ensure biofuels do not affect global food supply.

The so-called Rome Declaration stressed in-depth studies are necessary to ensure that production and use of biofuels is sustainable in accordance with the three pillars of sustainable development.

The PTI news agency said the position is shared by India, while TV news showed images of the Rome summit closing session.

Indian Agriculture Minister Sharad Pawar warned that “if we decided to convert all of world’s grain into motor fuel we will still need to use lots of oil and we would not be having anything to eat”.

The PTI noted that addressing the Rome summit, Pawar deeply advocated for an in-depth ed analysis biofuel production.

“Conversions of food grain and oil seeds for producing bio-fuel, prima facie appears to be fraught with food security concerns as is evident already, Pawar said, cited by PTI.

The world leaders met for three days in Rome to devise strategies to deal with the global food crisis and soaring prices, which are hitting the poor the hardest.
