Dead whale washed ashore in Orissa

Puri : A whale, which apparently died of injuries, was washed ashore on a beach in Orissa’s Puri district, an official said Sunday.

The 30-foot-long body of the marine mammal was spotted Saturday evening by villagers at Tandadhar beach of Bay of Bengal, some 130 km from state capital Bhubaneswar, a local forest official told IANS.

The whale could have been either hit by a ship or by a deep sea fishing vessel and was washed ashore after it died, the official said.

“Over the past two years, at least 12 giant whales were found dead along the 484 km-long Orissa coastline,” said Bichitrananda Biswal, president of the Orissa Turtle Trust, an environment conservation group, here Sunday.
