Congress condemns attack on its youth activists

New Delhi : The Congress Monday alleged that the Left Democratic Front (LDF) government in Kerala has “unleashed a reign of terror” in the state and condemned police baton charge on its youth wing activists demonstrating for a cut in the sales tax on petroleum products.

“We condemn the brutal, vicious and unprovoked attack on the Youth Congress activists in Thrissur and Kollam districts of Kerala. They were holding a peaceful march demanding a cut in the sales tax,” party spokesperson Jayanti Natarajan said.

The party will also approach the National Human Rights Commission to take up the matter, Natarajan told reporters.

“Police used electric batons and some of them (party activists) are in the ICU (intensive care unit),” she said.

Twelve Congress activists have been admitted to hospital after police cane-charged them last week.

Natarajan said the police compounded the offence by refusing to take the injured to the hospital.
