Maharashtra road mishap kills 17

Kolhapur (Maharashtra) : Seventeen people were killed and 30 others injured Monday in a road accident involving a state transport bus and a Tata Sumo off Karanjoshi village in Maharashtra’s Kolhapur district.

According to the police, the Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation bus, with 55 passengers aboard, was going from Malkapur to Kolhapur when the driver lost control while trying to avert collision with the Tata Sumo at a curve. The bus fell off a culvert. Most of the casualties were bus passengers.

The accident occurred around 1.00 p.m. Monday, assistant sub-inspector Babasaheb Karadage of Shahuwadi police station told IANS by phone.

The injured have been admitted to hospitals in Kolhapur and Malkapur, he said. It was raining since Monday morning and the road was slippery.

In another car crash, veteran Marathi film and stage actor Vihang Nayak was killed on the Mumbai-Pune Expressway. His driver also was killed on the spot.

The Expressway, in fact, witnessed as many as 32 accidents of various nature as the rain had made the expressway wet and slippery, officials said.
