Baby missing from Raipur hospital, believed kidnapped

By IANS,

Raipur : It has been 12 days since a newborn baby went missing from a government hospital in the Chhattisgarh capital but police Wednesday admitted they were yet to make any headway in the case.

Munni Bai, 25, fainted on hearing the news and then slipped into a coma after discovering that her eight-day-old baby had gone missing from the nursery of the Bhimrao Ambedkar Government Hospital May 31.

A resident of Mandir Hasod area on Raipur’s outskirts, Munni Bai had alleged that a nurse had offered her money if she gave away the baby to a couple wishing for a son.

The baby was born May 24 but doctors separated the child from Munni Bai on medical grounds. She was, however, allowed to breast-feed the baby every day. She was told on May 31 that the baby was missing.

After the police registered a case, District Superintendent of Police Amit Kumar had said the baby would soon be found and the culprits jailed.

However, the police are still clueless about the baby’s whereabouts.

“We are making all possible efforts to find the culprits. We have released the sketch of the woman suspected to have stolen the child and hope to crack the case soon,” Amit Kumar said Wednesday.

Police sources said police are planning to interrogate Munni Bai’s former husband to determine if he had any role in the kidnapping.

Munni Bai came out of her coma last week and returned home Monday. Before leaving the hospital, she told reporters that she hoped her child would be found soon.
