Drunk youth in speeding car mows down 11 in Mumbai

Mumbai : Five inebriated youth in a speeding car being chased by traffic cops in a high speed drama late Sunday night allegedly ran over at least 11 people in Malad, a northwest suburb here, police said Monday.

The incident occurred around Sunday midnight when the speeding car, apparently out of control, hit two auto rickshaws, pedestrians and pavement dwellers in the area.

According to an official at Malad police station, the occupants of the car were all inebriated and were being chased by traffic cops when the accident happened.

While three of the car’s occupants escaped, the other two, Chirag Jain (22) and Sunil Shah (22), both engineering students, were detained by the locals, police sources said.

Sunil Shah, who was at the wheel, is the son of a local businessman Bipin Shah, police said.

The police have arrested Shah under sections 279 (rash driving), 337 (causing hurt by an act endangering life) and 338 (Causing grievous hurt by act endangering life or personal safety of others) of the Indian Penal Code and relevant sections of the Motor Vehicle Act. He has been remanded in judicial custody till June 20.
