Sensex surges 301 points

Mumbai : For the second consecutive day Tuesday, the Indian equity markets closed on a high, thanks to solid buyer interest in banking and realty stocks.

The market started flat but by mid afternoon started to rise and continued the trend till the end of the session.

All the sectoral indices ended the day in the green.

The 30-share benchmark index of the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE), the Sensex, opened at 15,388.36 points and touched a high of 15,732.75 before closing at 15,696.90. It went up by 301.08 points or 1.96 percent compared to the closing figure Monday.

The S&P CNX Nifty index of the National Stock Exchange, which opened at 4,572.50 points, closed at 4,653.00. It went up by 80.50 points or 1.76 percent from its previous close.

The BSE Midcap index, which closed at 6,400.18 points, went up by 100.46 points or 1.59 percent.

The BSE Smallcap index, which closed at 7,781.30 points, went up by 112.19 points or 1.46 percent.

The market breadth was positive. On BSE, 1,802 shares advanced, 882 declined and 80 maintained status quo.

The top gainers of the day were HDFC at Rs.2,298.05 up 5.59 percent, Maruti Suzuki at Rs.755.60 up 5.22 percent and HDFC Bank at Rs.1207.55 up 4.87 percent.

The top losers of the day included Reliance Communications at Rs.503.20 down 0.92 percent, Satyam at Rs.484.30 down 0.85 percent and Bharti Airtel at Rs.833.65 down 0.71 percent.
