Though the reason of the clash at the upmarket Nirmal Lifestyle Mall was not immediately known, agitating Sikhs took to the streets and blocked traffic, a police official said.

A bodyguard of Dera chief Ram Rahim Singh apparently opened fire during the clash.

The victim, who was killed in the firing, was identified as Malkar Singh, while two passers-by suffered injuries. The Dera chief was said to be present near the mall when the violence took place.

Following the clashes, Punjab Chief Minister Prakash Singh Badal spoke to Maharashtra Chief Minister Vilasrao Deshmukh and demanded that those responsible for the violence be arrested, informed sources said.

While the police have registered a case against an unknown group of people, the state government has ordered an enquiry into the incident.

Meanwhile, security has been beefed up in the entire Nanded district in northeast Maharashtra, which has a large Sikh population.
