London : India’s Sania Mirza should not find it difficult to race through to the third round of the women’s singles at Wimbledon, starting Monday, as she is pitted against players ranked much lower than her in the first two rounds in the draw announced Friday.
Sania’s first big hurdle will come in the third round where she should run into seventh-seeded Venus Williams of the United States.
The 32nd seeded Sania will square up against Colombia’s Catalina Castano in the first round and if she beats her then she will play the winner of the match between German Martina Muller, ranked 103, and Spain’s Maria Jose Sanchez, who is ranked 100.
Sania has a 1-0 record against Castano which came last year in Pattaya City, Thailand.
Castano, 29, sizzled on the circuit two season ago to achieve a career-high ranking of 35 but since then she has hurtled down to 148 in WTA rankings, way behind Sania who is 33.
But Sania will be wary of her opponent as she is not in best of form going into the year’s third Grand Slam. She has returned to the circuit after three months as she was recovering from a surgery to her injured wrist.
Sania lost in the very first match of her comeback tournament DFS Classic in Birmingham before winning one round in Netherlands this week.
Sania though will take inspiration from her third round appearance at Wimbledon last year, her best performance on the hallowed grass court at the All England Club.
