Kabul : A suicide bomber killed at least 10 civilians and wounded six in the southern Afghan province of Helmand Friday, while two US-led coalition troops were killed in the same province, officials said.
Helmand police chief Mohammad Hussein Andiwal said the attacker detonated his explosive device as a convoy of foreign forces was passing in Gereshk district.
He said the injured people were also civilians, adding, “there is no further detail about any foreign troops casualties.”
Taliban militants claimed responsibility for the attack in a statement posted on their official website, saying they targeted a US convoy near the provincial Afghan intelligence department office around 10 a.m. Friday.
The insurgents claimed US forces suffered heavy casualties and damage to their vehicles, but that could not be independently verified.
The attack came one day after Nato and Afghan forces said they had driven Taliban fighters from areas near the southern city of Kandahar.
Two US-led coalition troops were also killed and another injured in combat in southern Helmand province Thursday evening, officials said.
A military statement issued from the US airbase at Bagram outside Kabul said the soldiers died in hospital from gunshot wounds.
It did not reveal the nationality of the soldiers.
