In the shoot-out, Luka Modric and Ivan Rakitic missed the target, while Rustu Recber saved Mladen Petric’s penalty.

The game was scoreless after 90 minutes, but ended 1-1 in dramatic fashion after extra time.

Substitute Ivan Klasnic thought he had given Croatia victory with a header a minute from time, but Turkish substitute Semih Senturk scored two minutes into injury time to force the game to a penalty shoot-out.

Croatia had most of the possession in the first half and looked dangerous when Danijel Pranjic and Ivan Rakitic came down the left flank.

But with neither side managing to break the deadlock in the second half, the game went into extra-time.

Turkey seemed to have more in reserve in the extra 30 minutes and substitute Semih Senturk and Tuncay Sanli put the Croatian defence under some pressure.

Germany beat Portugal 3-2 in their quarter-final Thursday in Basle. dpa adh gb
