Namakkal, Tamil Nadu : At least 500 woman laid a siege to a police station here in rural Tamil Nadu, demanding action against people who allegedly swindled over 600 womens’ self-help group members of about Rs.1 million. The police later swung into action and arrested eight people, including six women.
The suspects were arrested after agitating women alleged that they had parted with amounts ranging from Rs.1,000 to Rs.5,000 per head, against promises of being given house plots, the police said Sunday.
The angry women approached officials when it became clear that the plots were not forthcoming, police sources added.
A sum of Rs.150,000 has been recovered from the suspects, according to officials.
