Bhopal : Madhya Pradesh government Monday announced a monthly honorarium for those arrested during the 21-month Emergency rule in the country 33 years ago, an official statement here said.
“The honorarium, to be given in the name of Lok Nayak Jai Prakash Narayan, would be extended to the people who had been detained between June 25, 1975 and March 21, 1977 during the Emergency period under MISA (Maintenance of Internal Security Act) or DIR (Defence of India Rules) due to political reasons,” said an official statement.
Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan would also felicitate the detainees at his residence Wednesday, official sources said.
An honorarium of Rs.3,000 per month would be given to those who served jail term of one to six months. Those who underwent imprisonment for more than six months would be eligible to get Rs.6,000 per month.
The claimant would have to be a resident of the state and would have to obtain certificate of imprisonment from the concerned jail authorities.
The government has also decided to provide medical facilities to them at par with the freedom fighters.
On June 25, 1975, the then prime minister Indira Gandhi declared an Emergency in the country. During that period, many opposition leaders were jailed, freedom of press was suspended and powers of the judiciary were curtailed.
