Washington : Scientist James Hansen will warn US lawmakers on Monday about the need to stop global warming, 20 years after he first spoke about the issue in Congress.
Although in 1988 he found a very unreceptive audience, Hansen will appeal to the awareness of the members of the House of Representative to promote the idea that it is still possible to defuse “the global warming time bomb”.
According to The New York Times, the expert from the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) said the next US president faces a unique opportunity to galvanize the country around the need for a transformed, non-polluting energy system.
“If we don’t begin to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in the next several years, and really on a very different course, then we are in trouble,” Dr Hansen said at NASA’s Goddard Institute for Space Studies.
Hansen will encourage lawmakers to boost renewable energy sources, including solar and eolian energy, as well as to eliminate fossil fuel plants gradually to reduce generation of carbon dioxide.
Described as alarmist by some but highly respected in scientific circles, Hansen blames the United States, Great Britain and Germany for current climate changes and increased sea level.
