In a release issued in Berlin, Jung –that enjoys Legislative support- said the new troops will help meet the International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) tasks under NATO command.

The decision meets advice from Germany’s Armed Forces General Inspector Wolfgang Schneiderhan who urged for the increase to meet ISAF tasks like troop safety and training 7,000 local soldiers.

The US pressed Germany earlier to transfer troops to south Afghanistan where the resistance is more active, but the ruling coalition refused.

Hence, the increase does not respond to the above and Berlin intends to keep its troops in Kabul and north Afghanistan, which the US invaded and occupied in 2001.
