Napier had almost surpassed McCullum’s breathtaking 158 but he remained unbeaten on 152 in 58 balls against Sussex at Chelmsford. Napier though shattered many records in the process.

The all-rounder became the second highest run-scorer in Twenty20 behind New Zealand’s McCullum. It was also the highest score for England’s domestic Twenty20 cup.

Napier also set a new T20 record of hitting 16 sixes in an innings.

“It was awesome,” Napier said after Essex beat Sussex by 128 runs.

“I just started to see the ball better, middled one or two and then got into a rhythm.”
