S Korean president to attend G8 summit in Japan

Seoul : South Korean President Lee Myung-bak is planning to visit Japan on July 8-9 to attend the annual summit of Group-Eight (G8), the presidential office Cheong Wa Dae announced Wednesday.

On the sidelines of the summit to be held in Toyako, northern Japan, from July 7-9, Lee is to hold a series of bilateral summit talks with U.S. President George W. Bush, Russian President Dmitri Medvedev and leaders of India and Mexico, said the office.

“Lee will hold bilateral summit talks with the presidents of India and Mexico after arriving in Toyako on July 8. On July 9, Lee will separately hold bilateral summit meetings with Bush and Medvedev,” presidential spokesman Lee Dong-kwan said, quoted by the Yonhap news agency.

“The primary agenda of this year’s G8 summit will include climate change, oil prices and energy security,” said the spokesman.

The Group of Eight comprises the United States, Canada, Britain, France, Germany, Italy, Japan and Russia.
