New Delhi : While the Indian senior tennis pros slug it out at the third Grand Slam of the year at Wimbledon, the juniors got into the act Saturday.
Junior world no. 7 Yuki Bhambri remains the best Indian hope in the championships. Leander Paes was the last Indian to win the junior singles title in 1990 after the father-son duo of Ramanthan Krishnan (1954) and Ramesh Krishnan (1979) did it.
Yuki, who has been accompanied by coach Aditya Sachdeva, to the Wimbledon will face 58th ranked American TyD Trombetta in the opening round.
The Delhi youngster, who drew attention after he made it to the semi-finals at the Australian Open in January, is eager to do well on the hallowed grass at the All-England Club, having worked hard for it.
“I have tried to bring variety to my game. I have been working on my serve and volleys, especially trying to go for the kill quickly,” Yuki told IANS.
“I have adapted well to the grass and I am liking to play on the surface,” he said.
Yuki, who made a first round exit at the French Open, says it will be a challenge to play any of the top 50 ranked players in London.
“Anyone in the top 50 can be handful on any given day. So it is an open competition with no clear-cut favourites. ”
Asked why he did not think of playing more tournaments in the run up to Wimbledon instead of training at home, Yuki said there were not many tournaments for the juniors on grass.
“In fact, there was only Gary Webber tournament apart from the warm-up event at Roehampton, but I preferred practice on grass here than traveling all the way for one singles tournament.”
At Roehampton last week, Yuki lost in the first round.
