Berlin : A government report on poverty issued this month has sparked controversy among local politicians as to who is to blame for this situation.
A report on social issues triggered debate within the coalition Cabinet in May, but this new document confirms that in 2005, 13 percent of the population lived in poverty or near the line of poverty.
The text adds that 12 of every 100 children under 15 are threatened by the scourge and one of every four Germans would live in poverty if it not were for social programs, according to Der Spiegel weekly.
The document sparked criticism against the Cabinet of Chancellor Angela Merkel for informing the delicate situation while describing a nation of high prosperity.
