Paris : Seventeen people were wounded in an unexplained shooting incident Sunday at a French military barracks in the south of the country, Defense sources said by telephone.
The shooting took place at the Carcassonne military barracks during an “open house” day when the public is invited to visit the installation and mingle with troops and staff.
Defense Minister Herve Morin said after the incident that there was “a dysfunction” during an exercise when a soldier fired real rounds instead of blanks.
The extent of the injuries is still not known and President Nicolas Sarkozy is expected at the barracks, later on Monday, enquire about circumstances of the incident.
