The clashes started in the port of Douala, this country’s economic capital, but have been extended to this urban center and northeastern Bemenda.

There have been barricades, burned tires and attacks on businesses in recent days, due to protests about a rise in fuel prices that has an effect on basic products.

President Paul Biya accused the opposition of organizing these demonstrations to dismiss him from power.

Biya is trying to change the Constitution to stay in his post until after 2011 when his term of office expires.

Started as a national strike by transportation workers against high fuel prices, the current protest movement has become a massive anti-government expression.
