Suicide attack in funeral kills 40 in Pakistan: state media

Islamabad : A suicide bomber blew himself up in the funeral of a slain police officer in Pakistan’s northwest on Friday, killing 16 people, state television reported.

The suicide blast at Mingora a major city in Swat valley also injured over 60 others, PTV reported.

Over 500 people were attending funeral of a police officer Javed Iqbal, who was also killed in a roadside bomb attack in the city of Lakky Marwat, in northwest Friday morning.

Iqbal was going to office from residence when the bomb was exploded through a remote control, which also killed three other policemen.

The Interior Minister Hamid Nawaz Khan said it was a suicide attack.

Officials said that a former member of provincial assembly of Jamaat-e-Islami Muhammad Amin was also killed in the attack.

Most of the casualties are policemen were among the dead, witnesses and officials said.

The bomber struck when a contingent of police were giving salute to the slain police office at the lawn of a local school.

The injured were shifted to government and private hospitals and a large number of people rushed to hospitals to donate blood.

But the government hospital lack equipment to take blood from the people.

No group claimed responsibility of the attack.

Suspected militants regularly target policemen and troops in Swat valley, where the security forces are engaged in operation against the militants.

Maulana Fazalullah is leading militants in the bloody campaign against the security forces.
