United Nations : The vote in the Security Council on a draft resolution that would impose further sanctions on Iran over its disputed nuclear programme is now postponed till Monday, council diplomats said on Friday.

The co-sponsors of the draft – UK and France – who said late Thursday they would put the draft to a vote on Saturday, decided to postpone it till Monday to “give more time” to the reluctant four – Libya, Indonesia, South Africa and Vietnam – to join the consensus.

The draft is scheduled to be put in blue later tonight after last minute discussions among the co-sponsors and the reluctant four. The postponement was requested by South Africa, the diplomats said.

Libya is said to insist that it will “never” join the consensus because it finds it difficult to vote in favour of sanctions while itself suffered from them.

Indonesia said it is not convinced that sanctions are the right tools at this time, especially after the recent IAEA report stated “progress” in Iran’s compliance. What is sure, diplomats said, is that the vote this time will not be unanimous.
