New Delhi : The Supreme Court Monday observed that consultation with the group of apex court judges that form its collegium is a necessary step in judicial appointments.
A bench of judges Arijit Pasayat and P. Sathasivam made the observation while hearing a petition questioning Chief Justice K.G. Balakrishnan’s decision to confirm the services of an additional judge of the Madras High Court without consulting the apex court collegium.
The bench also asked the central government to appraise it of the detailed “memorandum of procedure for appointments to the higher judiciary”.
