BGR Energy gets nod for desalination plant

Mumbai : The Andhra Pradesh based BGR Energy Systems Ltd has received a pre-qualification approval for the Rs.7.5 billion Kutch Desalination Plant project in Gujarat.

For this project, BGR has formed a consortium with Spanish companies Inima Medioambiente, S.A. (OHL Group) and Aqualia, Gestion Integral Del Agua, S.A. (Group of FCC).

Informing the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) of the pre-qualification approval Tuesday, the company stated that the project envisages a 150 million litres per day (MLD) desalination plant along with the designing and setting up of a 25-30 MW captive power plant.

The project is based on BOOT (build, own, operate and transfer) basis with the water purchase agreement spanning a period of 20 years.

According to the company’s statement, Spanish company Inima has developed and executed more than 40 desalination plants worldwide, of which the 120 MLD Carboneras Sea Water Desalination Plant has been in successful operation since 2003.

Recently, the Inima and Aqualia combine were awarded the 200 MLD Desalination Plant in Algeria on 25 years BOOT basis.

On the Indian front, the release mentions that BGR Energy has built water treatment and effluent treatment facilities for power projects of 120-500 MW capacities. BGR Energy is currently completing effluent recycle plants in Tamil Nadu aggregating to 25 MLD to treat textile effluents.
