Agra : Eleven Shiva devotees, known as kanwarias, were killed when a cement-loaded truck they had boarded turned turtle in Hathras district of Uttar Pradesh, the police said Wednesday.
The devotees were going to Kasganj to fetch water from the Ganges for Shiv Ratri celebrations when the accident occurred at about 11.50 p.m. in Khemgarhi village, about 70 km from here.
An eyewitness told the police that the tragedy struck when the truck driver tried to avoid hitting a tractor trolley.
Police said the cement bags rolled over the passengers, killing nine instantly. Most of the victims belonged to Hathras district.
