Washington : US President George W. Bush has called Russian president-elect Dmitry Medvedev to congratulate him on his win in Russia’s presidential election.
“President Bush told Medvedev that he looks forward to working with him and he hopes the two can establish a close working relationship that will help them deal with important world issues,” National Security Council spokesman Gordon Johndroe said Tuesday.
“President Bush said he read with interest Medvedev’s recent remarks on personal freedom, independent media, rule of law and fighting corruption. The president wished Medvedev and his family all the best in the lead up to his inauguration in May,” Johndroe added.
The US has expressed desire to work with Medvedev, who won by landslide in Russia’s presidential vote Sunday.
The mild-looking former law professor and senior cabinet member is to replace incumbent President Vladimir Putin as the country’s third president.
