Gambari will leave New York and plans to arrive in Yangon Thursday after the military government there gave the authorization for his return visit, a UN spokesperson said Monday.

Michelle Montas said Gambari will remain in Myanmar “as long as necessary. He intends to meet all groups he had not met during his last visits.”

Gambari began last fall his diplomatic efforts at convincing the military junta to implement democratic reform, hold national reconciliation talks and release political prisoners, including Aung San Suu Kyi, leader of the opposition National League for Democracy.

She has been under house arrest for more than 10 years by the government for challenging their authority.

Gambari recently visited Beijing, Tokyo, Singapore and Jakarta as part of a campaign to gain support from Asian capitals for democratic reform in Myanmar.
