Counting of votes begins in Nagaland

Kohima : Counting of votes began Saturday in the northeastern state of Nagaland, elections to whose assembly were held earlier this week, officials said.

Election officials said counting of ballots began at 8 a.m.

“Trends are expected soon, while final results are likely to be out by afternoon,” an official said.

An estimated 85 percent of the total 1.3 million voters exercised their franchise in Wednesday’s polls for the 60-member state legislature.

The vote will decide the fate of 218 candidates – 60 from the Congress, 56 belonging to the Nagaland People’s Front (NPF), 23 from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), 25 from the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) and eight from the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) among others.
