ITF women’s tournament to kick off Monday

New Delhi : A $50,000 International Tennis Federation Women’s tournament will kick off from Monday at the Delhi Lawn Tennis Association complex.

The top four seeds are Johnasson Mathilde of France, Klepac Andreja of Slovenia, Mansieva Vesna of Russia and Wickmayer Yanina of Belgium.

Shikha Uberoi, Isha Lakhani, Rushmi Chakravathi and Ankita Bhambri are the four Indians to be given wild cards.

In the qualifiers Saturday, India’s Parul Goswami squandered a 3-0 lead in the decider to go down 2-6, 6-3, 4-6 to So-Jung Kim of Korea.

Other Indians in action, Geeta Manohar, Sagarika Phadke and Parija Maloo were also ousted.

Geeta was beaten 2-6, 0-6 by Vlada Ekshibarova of Uzbekistan while Phadke went down 0-6, 2-6 to Zhao Yi-Jing of China.

Parija fared better and took a set off Chinese Liu Wan-ting before losing 4-6, 6-0, 6-1.

US-based Neha Uberoi advanced to the second round after a 6-1, 6-2, win over Nicole Rottmann of Austria.
