Islamabad : A three-member fact-finding mission of the International Federation of Journalists (IFJ) Saturday met with President Pervez Musharraf and termed the media environment in the country as open, positive and forward-looking.
Aidan White, IFJ General Secretary and head of the delegation, told the President that the expansion and openness of media has had a positive impact on democracy, said a press statement.
Aiden White termed his visit to Pakistan as “productive” and said he found that media in the country was enjoying freedom.
“I see openness and optimism in Pakistan, which has been encouraged by you”, he said.
President Musharraf agreed with the delegation on the need for a dialogue on ethical journalism in the country and said it was a vital requirement.
Despite various issues, he said that he would continue to look forward to openness and freedom of expression as he believed that it will have a positive impact on democracy in the country.
It may be mentioned here that the transmission of a number of news channels was suspended after President Musharraf imposed emergency in the country in November.
Though, their transmissions have been restored but several restrictions in the shape of an ordinance were imposed.
