Nurse at U.S. embassy killed in blast in Pakistan

Islamabad : A Turkish woman, working in the American embassy as a nurse, was killed in a bomb blast in an Italian restaurant in the Pakistani capital Islamabad Saturday night, a doctor said.

“One female foreigner died from explosion-related injuries. Hername is Alain, she belongs to the U.S. embassy,” doctor Iftikhar Naru told reporters at the hospital premises.

The doctor said that the injured included two Pakistanis, one Japanese, one Somalian, who is now a Canadian national, and all others are American citizens.

Interior Secretary Syed Kamal Shah said that the woman died in the blast was a Turkish lady. He said that 10 others including eight foreigners were injured in the blast at the Luna Caprese restaurant at 20:45 local time (1545 GMT).

He said that it was not a suicide attack and the blast created a crater.

State-run PTV reported that 13 people were injured in the blast.

Two Pakistanis are in critical condition, doctors said. The other injured are in stable condition.

Pakistan’s Caretaker Prime Minister Mohammedmian Soomro Saturday condemned the blast, according to the official APP news agency.

He expressed shock over the number of people and foreigners whowere injured in the blast and asked the local administration to provide them best medical care.

Soomro also directed the authorities to take stringent steps and increase security in the capital.

Earlier reports said that at least three people were killed and around 10 others, most of them foreigners, were injured in a blast in the restaurant in the Pakistani capital on Saturday evening.

Witnesses said that they saw injured were being shifted in ambulance from the restaurant in the busy super market in central Islamabad. Foreigners and diplomats are frequent visitors of the restaurant.

Anwar ul Haq, a restaurant employee said that he saw 8 injured lying in the restaurant after the blast.

There were 15 to 20 people, most foreigners, were having dinner when the blast occurred.

The blast created panic in the market, where a large number of people were busy in shopping on the weekend.

The police immediately cordoned off the main road outside the restaurant.
