Rajkot : All the 72 agriculture market yards in the state, including 24 in Saurashtra and two in Kutch, remained closed Tuesday to protest the proposed tax on market yards.

The provision to tax market yards was made in the 2008-09 union budget presented by Finance Minister P Chidambaram in Parliament.

Besides the market yards, more than 150 wholesale grain markets in the state also joined the strike call, bringing to a virtual standstill the farm produce business worth millions of rupees.

Narayanbhai Patel, president of the Federation of the Market Yards, said the federation was planning to call strike of all market yards in the country against the proposed tax on agriculture market produce committees.
