“Members of the two legislative and executive authorities as well as all Kuwaiti people are confident that His Highness the Emir would make a decision conducive to the national interests,” Al-Kharafi told reporters Tuesday.

Asked about reports that the MPs mandated him to mediate between the parliament and the cabinet, Al-Kharafi said, “the issue reached the extent that nobody could decide on it except His Highness the Emir.”

“We are fully confident that His Highness the Emir would make the proper decision,” he reaffirmed, adding that any decision would be “most welcome and highly appreciated by all Kuwaitis.” Al-Kharafi voiced understanding of, and respect for, the viewpoint of the resigning cabinet.

However, he said: “It is unfair to put all blame on the National Assembly regarding the causes of the crisis as the letter of resignation said.”

“Many people believe that the cabinet members as well contributed to the crisis,” he said.

“The National Assembly, as a democratic institution, respects the other opinion,” Al-Kharafi added.

Regarding the government overtures to cement national unity, the parliament speaker said they came late. “Many issues could be ironed out before it is too late,” he said.

As for speculations on possible meetings between him and the Emir, on one hand, and between him and the resigning cabinet, on the other, to settle the issue of the resignation, he said no meetings have been decided so far.

“All efforts should focus on radical solution of problems. The legislative and the executive authorities should have the courage to iron out all disputable issues,” Al-Kharafi added.
