Bush backs Georgia’s effort to join NATO

Washington : US President George W. Bush said Wednesday he will urge NATO leaders at a summit in Bucharest next month to begin the process of admitting Georgia to the alliance.

“I believe that NATO benefits with a Georgia membership. I believe Georgia benefits from being a part of NATO,” Bush said during a meeting with Georgian President Mikhail Saakashvili.

Bush will attend the NATO summit in the Romanian capital April 2-4 in support of Georgia’s bid to join the alliance. The summit will deliberate on whether Georgia will be permitted to enter a programme leading to eventual membership.

“I think this is a very unequivocal support we are getting from you,” Saakashvili said.
