New Delhi : The government has earmarked Rs.8.02 billion to train India’s elite sportspersons for the 2010 Delhi Commonwealth Games, Sports Minister Mani Shankar Aiyar told Rajya Sabha here Thursday.
In a written reply to a question from O.T. Lepcha, Aiyar said that the fund, finalised after extensive discussions with all stakeholders, would facilitate state-of-art training, foreign exposure, scientific backup and equipment to athletes.
“The selection process under the scheme is done by the Sports Authority of India in consultation with the national sports federations of the concerned discipline before preparing the list of core probables with a profile of each sportsperson. The list will go to the government-constituted ‘monitoring committee’ and ‘steering committee’ before it is finalised,” Aiyar said.
“These core probables will undergo state of art training and exposure and closer to the Games, based on their performance, the teams which will represent India at the Commonwealth Games will be selected from out of these core probables.”
The Games will be held Oct 3-14.
