Islamabad : The Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) Saturday named Yousuf Raza Gillani as its prime ministerial candidate, according to local TV channels.
PPP co-chairman Asif Ali Zardari announced Gillani’s name as the prime ministerial candidate in a statement read out to the media by party spokesman Farhatullah Babar.
President Pervez Musharraf Thursday summoned the National Assembly session for the election of a new prime minister on March 24 and would administer the PM’s oath-taking the next day.
The candidate of the PPP and its coalition partners will have little problem to be elected since a major opposition party has decided to withdraw its
candidate for the post after mutual consultation.
The PPP emerged as the largest party in the National Assembly in the general elections held Feb 18.
