Five killed in Kashmir gunfight

Srinagar, March 23 (IANS) Four security personnel and a separatist guerrilla were killed Sunday in a gunfight on the outskirts of the summer capital of Jammu and Kashmir, police said.

On a tip off, a team of the police and the paramilitary Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) surrounded a house at Dangerpora area, 12 km from the city centre, early in the day, a police officer said.

“Our forces came under heavy fire from the holed up militants, resulting in the death of three policemen and a CRPF man,” the officer told IANS.

One militant, identified as Abu Hafiz of Lashkar-e-Taiba, was also killed. One officer said that firing from the house had stopped but the security forces were still searching the house.

According to reports, two policemen were seriously injured. This included the driver of Srinagar police chief Afadal Mujtaba.
