United Nations : The Palestinian mission to UN condemned the new Israeli aggressions against civil population in the Gaza Strip and the expansion of Jewish settlements in East Jerusalem and other occupied territories.
“Constant worsening of the situation and destabilization caused by Israeli aggressions demand the immediate attention from the Security Council,” said Palestinian permanent observer at UN, Riyad Mansour.
During an open debate on the Middle East situation, the Palestinian observer criticised the UN incapacity to condemn the attacks by Israeli military forces against Palestinian civilians, in violation of international law.
Besides these aggressions which have claimed the lives of hundreds of women, elders and children, Tel Aviv continues its colonial settlement activities and the construction of an illegal wall in Palestinian territory, he recalled.
In view of this situation, the Security Council must take practical, urgent steps to force Israel to comply with its obligations under the law, he demanded.
During the debate, Secretary General Ban Ki-moon expressed concern about a re-emergence of violence between Palestinians and Israelis, and reiterated the importance of a strong support from the international community to the Middle East peace process.
He recalled that negotiation is the only way to achieve the legitimate Palestinian aspirations, put an end to Israeli occupation, create an independent State and realize the Israeli aspiration to live in a lasting safe situation.
For his part, UN Under-Secretary General for Political Affairs Lynn Pascoe presented a report before the Security Council, expressing support to efforts made by the Egyptian government to check violence in the Middle East.
He indicated, though, that humanitarian situation remains very serious in the impoverished Palestinian occupied territories.
