Islamic teachings can alleviate AIDS: speakers

New Delhi: The Lucknow-based Foundation for Social Care organized a seminar on “Role of Islam in the Alleviation of AIDS” at New Delhi’s Ghalib Academy.

In his keynote address, Prof. Akhtarul Wasey of Jamia Millia Islamia said, “The aim of Islamic teachings is eradication of poverty, ignorance and factors damaging health.” He emphasized on the need to public morals and characters of the Prophet Muhammad. He said AIDS can be eradicated completely only through the Islamic teachings which forbid sexual perversions, the biggest factor for the spread of the epidemic.

In his presidential address, Maulana Zaheer Ahmad Siddiqui, president of the organization, said AIDS was not only a medical tragedy but also a social tragedy that destroyed thousands of families. The disease has made thousands of women widows and children orphans. He said Islam not only stressed on nikah (proper marital tie) but also made it easier so that a man could fulfill his sex needs in a decent way.

UNESCO expert on AIDS Dr. Shankar Chaudhary offered full guidance on how young generation can protect themselves from the disease.
