New Delhi : Obscenity in electronic and print media will not be tolerated, the central government informed the Delhi High court Wednesday.
The court was also informed that a committee has been constituted to review the Programme and Advertising Code that deals with the use of allegedly obscene pictures and visuals in the media.
Submitting its report in connection with a bunch of public interest petitions seeking directions to regulate the publication and telecast of allegedly obscene visuals, the information and broadcasting ministry informed the division bench of Chief Justice M.K. Sharma and Justice Reva Khetrapal that besides setting the committee, the government was also ready with the Broadcasting Regulatory Bill and it will be tabled soon.
U.K. Verma, additional secretary in the ministry, filed the report in compliance with the court’s earlier order to hold meetings with media groups over the issue.
Most of the media groups have suggested that the existing law, Cable TV Network Regulation Act, is adequate to deal with complaints against the media and amendments are needed only in certain provisions of the act to deal with cases related to publication or telecast of obscene visuals.
