UAE appoints the country’s first female judge

Abu Dhabi : President of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan Wednesday appointed the country’s first female judge, making it the second Gulf country to have a female judge after Bahrain, the official Emirates News Agency reported.

According to an emiri decree, Sheikh Khalifa who is also Ruler of Abu Dhabi Emirate, Khaloud Ahmed Juwan Al Dhahiri was appointed as a primary judge at the Abu Dhabi Judiciary Department. The appointment of Khaloud made the UAE the second Gulf country to have a female judge after Bahrain, which installed its first female judge in June 2006.

The move underlines the Abu Dhabi government’s commitment to women’s participation in the emirate’s overall development, thereport said.

In January, then Minister of Justice Mohammad Bin Nakhira AlDaheri announced that the ministry was amending the judiciary law to allow women to take positions as judges and prosecutors at the federal level.
