Baghdad : At least six people were killed and 23 wounded in separate incidents across Iraq, while the US military discovered a mass grave with 37 bodies, the US military and media reports said Friday.
In the late hours of Thursday, intense clashes between Iraqi forces and militants broke out in the city of Nasiriyah, some 350 km south of Baghdad, in which four policemen were killed and 12 injured, the Voices of Iraq (VOI) news agency said.
Seven militants were also injured in the heavy clashes. In the city of Diwaniyah, some 200 km south of the capital, two police officers were injured and a militant was killed in fighting between the Iraqi forces and militants in Akrad district, VOI said.
Also in Diwaniyah, militants targeted an Iraqi patrol in Somar area Thursday, leaving one civilian dead and another two, seriously injured.
Separately, US military forces said a mass grave containing 37 bodies was found Thursday in Baquba, some 60 km north of Baghdad.
“All the bodies were badly decomposed and appear to have been there for anywhere from two to eight months. Some of the bodies showed signs of torture,” a US military statement said.
