A Dubai Court sentenced the 40-year-old Russian national to life imprisonment, or 25 years in jail according to UAE laws, and fined him $13,600. He had been found guilty of smuggling medicine into the country and organizing its subsequent sale.

The drugs included Diazepam and Phenobarbital (Luminal). According to the national media, a large number of medicinal drugs widely used in other countries are banned in the UAE.

His 20-year-old female compatriot has been sentenced to six months in jail for practicing pharmacy without a license after a huge amount of tranquilizers were seized by drug officials in the Dubai food shop where she worked.

Both will be deported from the country after serving their sentences.
