New Delhi : The state-owned Minerals and Metals Trading Corp (MMTC) announced Friday that it would organise an exhibition of its products during the Akshaya Tritiya festival next week in Chennai aimed at cashing in on the booming demand for gold and silver.
In a collaborative venture with the World Gold Council and the Gitanjali Group, MMTC will host ‘The Festival of Gold’ exhibition that will see them exhibit an array of products that the public can view and buy.
“People flock in great numbers to buy gold and silver on this occasion,” Sanjiv Batra, chief managing director of MMTC, said during a similar exhibition here, which continues till May 11.
“Last year, some 55-60 tonnes of gold was purchased during this period, out of which 40-45 percent was sold in south India alone,” Batra told IANS, adding that it was the company’s endeavour to provide hallmark gold to customers.
He said MMTC’s imports in April increased by almost 70 percent as compared to last year, and hoped the trend would continue through the year.
Akshaya Tritiya falls on the third day of the bright half of the lunar month of Vaisakha of the traditional Hindu calendar. It is celebrated as the birthday of Parasurama, an incarnation of Lord Vishnu. It would be celebrated May 8 this year.
