Former Spanish prime minister Calvo Sotelo dead

Madrid : Former Spanish prime minister Leopoldo Calvo Sotelo died Saturday in his home in Pozuelo de Alarcon near Madrid at the age of 82, his family announced.

No details were given as to the cause of death.

The conservative politician came to the head of the Spanish government from February 1981 to December 1982, after the end of Spain’s Franco dictatorship.

He was best known in connection with the failed military coup led by Lieutenant-Colonel Antonio Tejero Feb 23, 1981 as parliament was to elect Calvo Sotelo premier.
