Kathmandu : Nepal authorities arrested 100 Tibetan demonstrators who tried to stage a violent protest in front of the Chinese consulate in Hattisar, reported The Kathmandu Saturday’s newspaper.
Among those detained, who were released later, are monk supporters of Dalai Lama who China accused of encouraging violent protests that shaken Lhasa, Tibet capital, last March.
Tibetan exiled groups have been organizing frequent public demonstrations in Nepalsince the anti-China campaign began.
Friday’s arrest and protest occurred one day after US ambassador Nacy J Powell demanded Nepalese acting minister Girija Prasad Koirala to allow Tibetan groups’ demonstrations against China.
The Nepalese government has reiterated it will not permit action that could damage relations with Beijing and its support of one China policy.
