Three killed in Gujarat pharma unit blast

Ahmedabad : At least three workers were killed in a blast in pharma major Wockhardt Limited’s unit at Ankleshwar in central Gujarat Monday.

Police told IANS the metal lid of a tank got blown off at noon apparently due to heat and pressure built up as it was being welded. Three workers near the tank were fatally injured though there was no other casualty.

The unit, in an industrial estate of the Gujarat Industrial Development Corporation (GIDC) in Ankleshwar, about 200 km from here, is a US FDA-approved dedicated facility for manufacturing cephalosporin.

In another incident, in Ahmedabad, a fire broke out in the premises of Nandan Exim Limited at Saijpur-Gopalpur Pirana road on the city outskirts and gutted a cotton storehouse.

Nandan Exim, a unit of the Chiripal group of industries, produces denim cloth.

Brij Mohan Chiripal, a director of the Chiripal group, told IANS: “A fire has broken out in a closed storage belonging to Nandan Exim. There is no casualty or injury.”

Three fire tenders accompanied by seven water tankers were rushed to the spot to control the fire.

Rajesh Bhatt, deputy chief fire officer of Ahmedabad city fire services, said the fire was very intense and it could take more than a day to fully douse it.
